This English translation of Vallières' classic work delineates his vision for an independent Quebec, written at a pivotal moment in the province’s history. Published just one year after the 1976 Quebec election in which the Parti Québécois, led by René Lévesque, came into power for the first time, The Impossible Quebec captures the urgency and tension of a rising sovereigntist movement. Though aligned with the goal of independence, Vallières remains sharply critical of the PQ’s entanglement with corporate interests, forcefully arguing that the party had no real desire to build a society truly independent from North America's Anglo-capitalist order.
In The Impossible Quebec, Vallières addresses a wide range of issues, including Quebec's political isolation, the relationship between independence and socialism, the role of the press, the fate of the Inuit, ecological questions, and more.
Pierre Vallières (1938-1998) was a journalist and writer who was considered to the intellectual leader of the Quebec Liberation Front (FLQ). He frequently wrote on the struggles of French-Canadians and, alongside Charles Gagnon, founded the first FLQ network to openly call itself socialist.
