Recreating Politics: Democracy in CrisisYorgos N. Oikonomou, translated by Dimitris Thanasoulas |
What do we mean when we speak of politics? And what do we do with the fact that millions of people now reject mainstream politics altogether, alienated by crooked politicians, self-serving party machines, and slickly deceptive mass media? In the past few decades, concerned citizens around the world have pioneered the beginnings of an alternative politics, occupying and reclaiming urban public spaces, engaging in mass civil disobedience, establishing horizontal networks of mutual aid , and confronting decision-makers directly. This parallel citizen's power offers a glimpse of an emerging path forward, one in which democracy, reconfigured to be much more local and direct, becomes capable of deep institutional change.
Drawing from the historical example of ancient Athens and the important insights offered by contemporary cities, Yorgos N. Oikonomou makes a compelling case for the re-creation of politics altogether. Translated for the first time from the Greek original (Athens School, 2021) by Dimitris Thanasoulas, this refreshing analysis, rooted deeply in Oikonomou's historical scholarship and philosophical background, makes a much-needed contribution to the discussion on democracy: real prospects for today and tomorrow.
Yorgos N. Oikonomou is a veteran of the Greek anti-dictatorship movement and former student of Cornelius Castoriadis. He was educated in France, where he received a Masters in Philosophy from Sorbonne University, and Greece, where he received a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Crete. He has published eight books in Greek and is a regular speaker at takes, conferences, and debates. He walked away from a traditional academic teaching career to teach instead at the Athens School, an independent social cooperative institute of research and learning.
