Homage: A Life in Three Movements

Valerie Hunnius

This memoir reflects the historical record of the achievements of Gerry Hunnius during the peace movement of the 1960s, the workers’ control movement, and the environment movement. It also describes an era during which concentration of capital, monopolization of markets and their globalization marginalized organized labour, captured the political agenda of even ‘socialist’ political parties and ruptured middle class expectations of upward mobility. In very personal terms, Valerie Hunnius describes her life as a fellow activist in the labour movement, the women’s movement and the environment movement. Becoming an activist amid these social conditions created contradictions in her relationship with Gerry, and their joint responsibilities as parents.

In addition to being a love story, the memoir reflects the resilience of non-governmental resistance to protect the commons, mitigate climate change, develop a sustainable economy, promote class, race and gender equality, and create measures and institutions to protect democracy.
