A symbol of working-class militancy and female revolt, Emma Goldman's reputation during her lifetime was in part created by her incorrectly assumed connection with the assassination of President McKinley. By 1919, the soon-to-be deported Goldman was known as "the most dangerous woman in America." After her death in 1940, Goldman's reputation continued to spread and evolve; today, she is considered as a "cult figure" of 20th century anarchist thought.

Goldman was made up of differing skeins; different shades of beliefs; she changed her mind on issues, she saw complications. She was dedicated to, but not blinded by, ideals. Her world was a working-class world, where survival was the guiding practice. A complicated figure, the character of "Emma Goldman" has adopted multiple different personalities. There are many "Emma Goldmans" out there; they dance and sing in operas and rock bands; they have shows on Broadway; they appear on t-shirts and mugs; and they even appear on TV and film.

To achieve a closer look at the many created versions of Goldman, Nicholson uses visual and written sources to identify how Goldman was shown to the American public, analyzing how these images softened and changed over the years in order to peel back the layers of this political icon.
