In this captivating autobiography, Charles Denby recounts his life as a Black man navigating the tumultuous social and political landscape of the 20th century. Growing up in the Jim Crow South, Denby eventually relocates to Detroit, where he finds employment in an automobile factory. There, he becomes deeply involved in both racial and labor resistance movements, exploring the intersection of these struggles within the broader context of class conflict in the United States. This profound book provides unparalleled insight into the firsthand experiences of radical politics during this era, and is a testament to the people's struggle for freedom and equality.

Indignant Heart was originally published in 1952. In the 1979 edition, Denby restores the real names of people and places, which he had initially altered for privacy and safety, and adds a second part detailing his perspective as a Marxist-Humanist during the civil rights movement.

Praise for Indignant Heart

"The 75 years of Charles Denby's life are so full of class struggles, Black revolts, freedom movements that they not only illuminate the present, but cast a light even on the future. Listening to him, you felt you were witnessing an individual's life that was somehow universal, and that touched you personally. The genius of Charles Denby lies in the fact that the story of his life--INDIGNANT HEART: A BLACK WORKER'S JOURNAL--is the history of workers' struggles for freedom, his and all others the world over." - Raya Dunayevskaya

“As literature, as a historical document, and as a political document, Indignant Heart is a classic." - Jeremy Brecher, In These Times
